A LEGEND IN THE MAKING
By Chris Allen
Pepper MaShay is in high demand and hardest working female vocalists in the biz. In 2000, singer/songwriter Pepper MaShay became a household name in the dance music community practically overnight when she teamed up with Barry Harris and released the club anthem Dive in the Pool, the theme song for the Showtime series Queer As Folk.
On the wave of that single’s success, a year later the duo released I Got My Pride. Another chart topping hit. The trend continued, every single Pepper released is a success. Just last year, in 2007, Pepper kicked things off in January with another number one single on the charts, Lost Yo Mind. With a hot new hit on the horizon, another number one seems right within this diva's grasp.
A long time player in the music biz, Pepper MaShay has worked with a long list of legendary artists including Tina Turner, Whitney Houston, Michael Bolton, and Cher since the mid 70's. Pepper learned the lessons of professionalism from the greatest and applied them to her own life and career with amazing results. And Pepper MaShay loves to perform and digs doing it live. She loves her fans dearly and insists on not just engaging her audiences, but inviting them to not just share in the experience but be a part of it as well.
From my secret beachfront hideout in Surfside I caught up with Pepper in early October to chat about her then upcoming performance in Galveston, her rich history, and some new and exciting projects that the diva’s got in the works. Having spoken numerous times before in a less formal setting, I feared that we might get off topic from time to time. That never happened. This gal’s a pro ya’ll. It was strictly business. So here’s how it went. My official interview with the one and only Pepper MaShay.
Chris Allen: So where and when did this all begin for you Pepper? Was it as a child, a very young woman, were you influenced by the church or in school or your family?
Pepper Mashay: Basically, all the above. What got me going was I started putting bands together when I was in high school and started playing around the military post we were stationed at. I'm a military brat so, that was one of my past times, to go around and performing for the GIs on base. Next
